Off season visit to this mysteriously awesome place. No crowds. Impressive dunes. Great off road driving. Wide open spaces, and big/big sky. Stayed in nearby Alamosa for great restaurants and in… Full review by David C

We only had time for a brief visit taking a short detour off our planned route to see the dunes. They were certainly spectacular and we were pleased that we stopped by. We also benefited from havi… Full review by ew25

Beautiful park to explore with friends and family - and at every physical skill level. Walk across the sand flat, scramble up dunes, sled down, and watch the stars at night. Best times of day to vi… Full review by Travelin_Gal2009

We stayed at the nearby KOA, only about 20 minutes from the Dunes Nat’l park. It had all the amenities, and a great view from the campground of the mountains.

Hi, planning to head over this week. I keep reading about reservations online but cant seem to figure out how to get passes to enter. Do they sell enterance tickets there? Also how does experiencing it at night work (not camping there) Thanks!

Reservations are likely for the campgrounds--not for day use. But apparently they are doing that at the gate which causes delays. They may also be delaying people from entering the park to keep the numbers down. I saw them doing that at Black Canyon as well two weeks ago. My advice: 7:00 AM visitors--no problem with crowds...11:00 AM visitors...you take your chances.

Definitely go early and/or take something to put on your dog’s feet. We arrived at 10am and by 11am the sand was burning our feet when with sandals on. Many people were wearing socks only and that seemed to be a great way (for humans) to enjoy the sand dunes without worrying about shoes filling up with sand.
Q:
How cold was it when you went, Im going mid march and im afraid there will be snow or freezing.

The temperature in October was mostly in the 40s & 50s during the day, but it was below freezing at night. The temperature did not affect our enjoyment of the dunes. But I'm guessing that March could be a different story. If you hit a warm spell, snow melt will likely fill the stream bed, which was virtually dry when we were there. Like others have suggested, checking a reliable weather Website is a good pre-trip step.
